FAQ

What do you pickup?

At this time, Boston e-Cycle is taking the following: Servers, desktops, laptops, monitors, switches, routers, storage arrays, hard drives, power cables, Ethernet cables, fiber cables, drive caddies, RAM, motherboards, power supplies, laptop batteries, PDUs, surge protectors, extension cords, VGA cables, serial cables, keyboards, mice, USB drives, speakers, scanners, printers, cardboard boxes, packing peanuts, styrofoam, bubble wrap, packing air bags, packing paper, crates, and pallets…..I think I lost my breath at this point. If you’re ever wondering if we take anything that is not listed above, just simply ask us.

Where do you pickup?

So we haven’t really drawn up a fine-tuned map of our pickup area yet, but we’re glad to offer pickup services to the greater Boston area. We are a small startup at this time, so our resources are limited and we’d prefer to cover the area within the I-495 belt at this time. Does this mean that we won’t pickup from you if you are in NH or RI? Not at all…we’re pretty adaptive and agile so we like to “go the extra mile”. Apologies for really bad puns.

What do you do with our equipment?

For the most part, prior to recycling completely unusable equipment, Boston e-Cycle looks to make use out of everything, and will strive to get things to a working condition where we can sell it or donate it. Maybe we’ll make some cool structure for Burning Man and then auction it off for charity? But no, in all seriousness, we will sell working systems online or to existing customers directly. We firmly believe that just about anything will find it’s proper home and even work with schools and communities to assist people with donations or loaner equipment.

What do you do with our hard drives?

If our partner is not scheduled to pickup directly from you, we will deliver it to them for data destruction (which is cheaper for you as a client). Working our way up from cheap –> expensive, we will coordinate our data destruction partner to come down the same day that we pickup from you. The next, and most expensive method of data destruction, is to have on-site data destruction. It’s all entirely up to you and what you are comfortable with.

I have absolutely no client, personnel, or personal data on my drives. Will you buy them? If so, what do you do with them?

The quick answers (trust me, I can go too in-depth with this one at times) are yes to buying the drives, and we use DoD standard cleaning software to wipe and overwrite the drives. It’s better for us to do this before we use them in servers/desktops/laptops that we’ll sell or donate, and it’s better for you as a commercial business.

Seriously, why do you take packing material? Are you trying to save the world?

I will only smile and say that we like to reuse as much as we can, and if it’s not reusable to us, we’ll use one of our multiple partnerships in the Boston area to properly recycle anything and everything.

Are you e-Stewards certified yet?

Boston e-Cycle decided in 2017 to hold off on pursuing e-Stewards certification. There are multiple 3rd party recyclers that we work with to properly dispose (recycle) electronic waste. At some point, we will definitely revisit this as we grow.

Are you insured?

Yes, we are fully insured at this time. We’d be crazy not to be.

Are you SOX / HIPAA / GLBA compliant?

Boston e-Cycle does not destroy the media but utilizes a 3rd party vendor (SecurShred) to finalize the data destruction process. Any and all media that is temporarily taken off-site by Boston e-Cycle is kept locked away behind gates….so that’s about 2 layers of security for the experts out there. Typically we will schedule SecurShred to arrive on-site after we have pulled the drives from systems being cleaned out, so that our clients are fully compliant with the federal, state, and local laws governing data destruction.

Any plans to pickup from residential areas/homes?

For now we can only do free pickups from residences if there are 5 or more items. These items can consist of desktops, laptops, printers, monitors, or other larger computer equipment. We plan to work with the city of Boston and surrounding neighborhoods (and to use Twitter) to setup weekly drop-off trucks that will be staffed and you can swing by with your old equipment, knowing that it will be put to good use and possibly given a new home somewhere in the world.

Are you e-Stewards certified yet?

Boston e-Cycle is proud to pursue e-Stewards certification at this time. The process is being worked out on our end and all those lovely forms will be filled out in the very near future. It’s something we are striving for, so that we can show we are dedicated to the recycling industry/methodologies.

Are you insured? Will you sue us if you injure yourselves while removing equipment?

Please check back on 2/14/16 and this question will be gone from the FAQ. AKA – we are getting our insurance worked out (and if you know the owner and his MBTA bus story, you know the answer to the second question, which will probably be erased to not scare too many potential clients away).
